Google Launches “Search Without Boundaries”

Google Translate got a little more sophisticated today, allowing people to search international pages in their own language. An English-speaking person could search for “hiking trails Tuscany” within Italian search results, for example, or an Italian speaker could find “ristoranti italiani” in New York. The translation works across characters too - Chinese (simplified or traditional), Arabic, and Russian translations are all available. From the Official Google blog,

“While machine translation is not perfect, it’s usually good enough for you to obtain the gist of information in a language you might otherwise be unable to access. We think this feature will be particularly useful for our international users since although the majority of Internet users out there are non English speakers, a majority of the content on the internet is still in English.”

Only 12 languages are available for translation, but the service is still just a beta. Search Engine Land points out that Yahoo has offered similar multi-lingual search results since 2005.
