Adobe Photoshop Moving Online

Written By Kate Zimmermann | February 28, 2007 | Share This |

Following the example of Google, Zoho, and other online services that mimic desktop applications, Adobe will release an ad-supported version of Photoshop to compliment its more sophisticated offline app. Adobe will base the project on their online video editing program, Adobe Remix. Says CNET, “Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe’s more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. [CEO Bruce] Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising.”

Recognizing that locally-installed software is slowly being outdated by hosted applications, Adobe is preemptively seeking to diversify its product offerings. As Chizen told CNET,

“We are watching folks like Google [move applications online] in different categories, and we want to make sure that we are there before they are, in areas of our franchises…We recognize there is a customer there–we recognize they are not going to pay us, necessarily, directly. But we could use ad revenue as a model. Google has demonstrated that it works pretty well for certain types of applications.”
