By now the controversy over Google China is old news. Heck, it’s even garnered an article in USA Today, leaving those desperate for an angle publishing Rainman-like lists of censored words appearing in Google China’s search results.
The much less talked about story, however, is that of Google competitor Yahoo’s presence in the People’s Republic.
New statements released by Reporters Without Borders allege that Yahoo China is the worst offender when it comes to censoring search results.
Here’s a snip:
“A massive 97 per cent of the results returned by Yahoo China were to authorised sites, making it more restrictive than Chinese competitor Baidu. Google China returned 83 per cent authorised sites, compared with 78 per cent for MSN China. The same search on Google.com showed only 28 per cent of authorised sites in the results.”
Wired News wanted to know, what’s up with that? and asked RSF Internet Freedom desk chief Julien Pain:
“Google.cn is censored, but it’s far less than what Yahoo does.”
Yahoo had no comment, but Slashdot readers do, pulling in everything from capital punishment to UFOs in order to make a point. Way to play a clean game, guys. Next time try Tickle Me Elmo or Britney Spears.
