There’s a new AdSense format out in limited beta testing that places an image into a column of related ads, according to Jen Slegg. Called “Vertical Images,” the ads could help increase click-through rates, as publishers have previously noted that conversions increase when relevant images are located near text ads.
We haven’t come across this phenomenon ourselves, but check the link to Jen’s blog above for a screenshot; a close-up pic of a flower’s petals adorns a series of ads selling “Petals Silk Flowers,” “Beautiful Wedding Flowers,” and the like.
Loren Baker points to another screenshot at Digital Inspiration; in this example, ads for “Mercer Human Resources” and “HR Consulting Job” accompany a picture of a man in a suit, pointing purposefully out of the screen, wearing an I-have-selected-you-for-kickball expression.
The Vertical Images ads are appearing in the 120 X 600 ’skyscraper’ AdSense format, and Jen Notes that “There are…reports that these vertical images are displaying in ad units that are specified as text only.” The pictures are apparently generic, and some folks are saying that they themselves are a type of Link Unit advertising. That is, when clicked, they bring users “to a page of related advertisements” based on the topic of the picture. We’ll let you know if we see or hear more.
