eBay Commissions Sales Force with New AdContext

Earn extra money by helping make eBay sales! That seems to be the promise of eBay AdContext, a new contextual advertising program the auction site will begin testing next week.

Barry Schwartz points out a couple of articles on the subject, one from USA Today, one from Reuters. eBay AdContext will be similar to offerings like Google’s AdSense and Yahoo! Publisher Network in that it’ll use keyword-based contextual advertising on publisher’s websites, and it’s similar to MSN’s ContentAds (soon to begin testing as well) in that it has a painfully generic name.

Not everything’s the same, though. Instead of being part of a broad advertising network, eBay’s ads will link back exclusively to eBay auctions, trying to match up the products for sale with keywords found on participating AdContext sites. And publishers won’t be compensated on a pay-per-click basis, as with other contextual services. Instead, they’ll earn a commission only if an ad click from their site results in an actual eBay transaction. The amount could be anywhere between 35 and 70 percent, “depending on volume,” according to Reuters.

Sounds like it could be a boon for webmasters - especially those who maintain hobby sites about, say, luxury yachts. Hopefully, AdContext ads will be more effectively targeted than the ubiquitous ads we see eBay running on Google searches; maybe it’s just us, but some a lot of them seem unrealistically broad.
