Yahoo!’s been testing an upgrade to their homepage since February (we noticed in early March) but not everybody had a chance to take it for a spin until today.
Yahoo! somewhat solemnly declared its availability on their Search Blog, touting features like the “personal assistant” (an AJAX-powered expandable box showing personalized info such as Yahoo! Mail messages, a local weather report, and the like) and Yahoo! Pulse (a factoid window cycling between popular search terms for various categories and “pop culture trends”).
That’s all well and good, but we think they should have led off with “Simplified Navigation,” which is probably the page’s best asset. It’s simply less noisy than its predecessor and easier on the eyes - although those that don’t agree can easily switch back to the old design.
For those who pine for a truly spartan search experience, Danny Sullivan reminds us that Yahoo! does have a dedicated search page; he also points us in the direction of Richard MacManus, who has an in-depth take that includes a link to a podcast interview with Yahoo’s Ash Patel and Tapan Bhat.
New Ad System Takes to the Catwalk In other Yahoo! news, Elinor Mills of News.com says that Yahoo! is set to show off their upgraded ad ranking system at Yahoo! analyst day tomorrow. Those lucky enough to attend the event, in Frisco, will get a look-see months in advance of the expected third quarter rollout.
