World O’ Google: Lobbying Blues, Google TV, More

It may seem like the Earth stops spinning over a 3-day weekend, but Google is here to remind us that they’ve always got something shaking. Here’s a few tidbits:

Mr. Google goes to Washington, takes his lumps Big G is an old hand at the search game, but lobbying on Capitol Hill is something they’re still getting used to. Detlev Johnson points out a Seattle Times story detailing Google’s fresh-faced and often feckless first months trying to influence the legislative process. One “tactical mistake?” A Google exec tried to debate committee members before a congressional panel. Heaven forfend!

Breaking into TV, the new-fashioned way Threadwatch points to a piece that says Google is exploring ways to extend its search know-how onto the boob tube. Hinting that viewers should have access to all the world’s televised information, CEO Eric Schmidt says, “You have to look at what an electronic programme guide is. It is just a search engine and that is what Google does best.” (Excellent point, but we think he probably pronounced “program” without the extra “me.”) Check the rest of the article at The Business Online.

Epicuriouser and epicuriouser… We noticed something odd while searching for “recipes” on Google. Above the organic results is an invitation to “refine your search” by cuisine and main ingredient; no matter how you choose to refine it, though, all of the results thereafter seem to come from epicurious.com. Are they really the only recipe provider in the Google Base right now?

This just in… Want to get Google News to spider your content? SE Roundtable points to a DigitalPoint thread that’ll help you out. One qualification, apparently, is to have 5 authors and 3 editors, all with profiles on your site. Might be time to dust off that “Now Hiring” shingle.
