Tuesday Links - Robot’s Birthday Edition

Written By Reprise Media | May 30, 2006 | Share This |

The robot made its first appearance 85 years ago yesterday, in a Czech play by Karel Capek (thanks, Digg) - although for links purposes, today is Robot’s Birthday Observed. From “Klaatu barada nikto” to “No disassemble number five” to “Kill all humans,” it’s been quite a journey for our mechanized servant friends. In that spirit, you are hereby programmed to check out these links:

Buckle up, we may experience some turbulence Yahoo! announced yesterday with a “Weather Report” that another search index update should start to affect rankings this week. There’s already some buzz in the forums, according to SE Roundtable, and Yahoo! wants to hear from webmasters as well; they’ve provided a new and nifty feedback form.

One order of grist, coming up A rumor about a new Google offering? Must be Tuesday. Gossip about a long-anticipated PayPal-like online payment system from Google started to grow legs again as Garrett Rogers blogged about an anonymously registered “Google checkout” domain Sunday. Meanwhile, across the internet, Inside Google posted that a “quality tipster” had the scoop on a closed beta test for a system that would allow users to “make purchases from ‘high-quality merchants’ using their Google Accounts.” Google Payments, Google Checkout, or something else? The Google Truth is out there.

And we thought the they had hoverboards in 1990 Usually, we can only bring you word of things that have already happened, but thanks to News.com, we can get around that just this once. They point to Tech Blog’s list of the “Top 10 Strangest Gadgets of the Future” - presumably coming to a space mall near you at some point. How strange are these gadgets? The Intelligent Spoon only rates an “honorable mention.”

Not exactly one for the tech support desk Apple opened a brand new 5th Ave. store, oh, about a week ago, just up the street from us here at Reprise Media. The underground location gets a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs,’ thanks mainly to its entranceway - an enormous glass cube at street level. Over the weekend, however, some teenage tourists were saying ‘uh-oh’ instead when they got trapped in the store’s elevator - and since it’s also transparent, passersby could witness every moment of their harrowing 45 minute extraction. Hmm…guess David Blaine will have to come up with something else for his next stunt.
