Trouble in Blogville

Bloggers and legal scuffles - they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

First up is an item about ad agency WKPA suing Maine-based blogger Lance Dutson over negative remarks he made on his blog about one of the agency’s campaigns. The agency is complaining that searches on its name now bring up Dutson’s complaints, potentially hurting its business.

From a story in the Portland Press Herald:

“Warren Kramer Paino charges that the blog ‘contains numerous defamatory statements designed to blacken WKPA’s reputation, expose WKPA to public contempt and ridicule and injure WKPA in its business and profession.’”

Of course, the story doesn’t really go into the details on exactly what was said. Luckily Gawker offspring Consumerist is there. I won’t give it away, but it has to do with a phone sex line and a moose.

The next item is a play on the old politician vs. politician smear tactics but with an updated twist. It seems that political rivals are using blogs to create false identities, many of them posing as average citizens who criticize the competition.

A clip from an article in the Tampa Tribune:

“Two recent Web political attacks in Florida are among a growing number of cases nationally that seem to be inspired by the shadowy double-dealings one might expect to find in a Cold War spy thriller.

A Web site attacking Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist paid a proxy company to shield the identity of whoever is behind the message, and a fake biography discrediting Hillsborough County Commissioner Ronda Storms used the anonymous registration process of networking site MySpace.com.”

Pretty sketchy stuff. One pseudo-politico who’s still a stand-up guy? Stephen Colbert. Catch him in this awesome roast of the Commander in Chief.
