Spam with Strings Attached: Yahoo & AOL to Charge Marketers for Email

Yahoo and AOL have announced plans to start charging marketers what this New York Times article calls “the electronic equivalent of a postage stamp” for the guaranteed delivery of their email messages to customers.

The system will give high-priority treatment to messages from companies who pay anywhere from 1/4 of a cent to one penny per message. This could prove beneficial to marketers who complain that many so-called ‘legitimate’ messages are not making it through to their customers’ inboxes, and instead are being caught in increasingly sophisticated spam filters.

From the article:

“The Internet companies say that this will help them identify legitimate mail and cut down on junk e-mail, identity-theft scams and other scourges that plague users of their services.”

Sounds nice, but there’s also the little matter of the millions and millions of dollars AOL and Yahoo stand to generate once these initiatives are put into place.

The Techdirt blog has some good commentary in this snappily titled post, AOL, Yahoo to Charge Marketers Due to Own Spam Filter Failings.
