Digging on A Digg Just for Us

By now most of you have heard of Digg.com, the rapidly growing site which combines social bookmarking, blogging and syndicated news feeds in one great big beautifully democratic web destination.


This week Threadwatch alerts us to a digg counterpart created just for the search engine and SEO set.


It’s called SearchEnginePress.com and it’s the brainchild of David Vincent Gagne.


According to its About Us page, the mission of Search Engine Press is this:

“There are thousands of sites that tell you the latest news. The Search Engine Press tells you the best news. That’s because The Search Engine Press lets you choose the news. Visitor-submitted - and visitor-ranked - links point you to the best stories on the ‘net.”

Sounds great, now why don’t you tell us why we really should pay attention.


Luckily, Gagne has an answer for that one too. From Gagne’s response to a reader who asked that very question on a recent Threadwatch post:

“I made SEP because there’s so much #$@% spam seo-news out there …and I wanted to have a place where i could see links that others had already tagged as legit. I think applying the digg model to a vertical like this empowers the community to see (and get, and publish) what they really want. The more active you are, the more karma you have. When people tag something you’ve posted as spam (or crap, or whatever) you lose karma. But it’s a group effort. The good stuff floats to the front page. The useless dregs sink to the bottom.
I don’t have time to read *all* the news. And I certainly am not going to trust an rss feed as being full of “valuable” content.”

Now that’s more like it.

BTW, in case you’re not nerdy enough to catch it, the acronym for Search Engine Press is also a much-loved reference in science fiction.
