Google to Feature Graphical Ads at AOL’s Behest

Just last week the SearchViews editorial team sat around a conference room table and took a look at the 2005 Predictions posted in the beginning of this year.

There were some hits and some misses, inlcuding our prediction that Google would be featuring image ads on search engine results pages.

Imagine our surprise when this article (reg req’d) appeared in today’s New York Times that says the search engine will be doing just that:

“Users of Google’s search engine will soon see something they are not used to on the notoriously spare site: advertising with logos and graphics…The executives close to the talks said that at AOL’s request, Google would begin to test various forms of graphical ads, and that it would make the same formats available to other advertisers. Google has started to sell graphical ads for placement on other sites; plans to do so on Google itself were accelerated by the AOL talks, an executive involved in the negotiations said.”

Guess we can move that prediction out of the ‘wrong’ column and into the ‘right’. Talk about last minute…

Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch has more extensive coverage.
