Yahoo Trip Planner Hits the Road

Not long after word spread of Google’s new travel tool comes news that Yahoo has launched one of its own.

It’s called “Yahoo Trip Planner” and it’s available in beta form here.

Here’s an excerpt from this announcement on the Yahoo Search Blog:

“Trip Planner is a new tool that helps you organize your travel research from Yahoo! Travel and all over the Web to a trip plan. Save hotels, attractions, and useful web sites into your trip plan, then add your own notes, tags, driving directions and more. When you’re done, you can share your trip with a few friends or with the entire Yahoo Travel community.”

There’s also a special Burglar Notification System which sends a GPS message to all thieves in your area detailing where you’re going and exactly how long you’ll be leaving your home unattended (kidding).

Yahoo plans on eventually incorporating features that will allow travelers to document their journeys via web, mobile phone, digital camera, etc.

Not to nerd out, but innovations like these are happening a mile a minute and its all pretty awesome. Travel is one of my favorite areas for user-generated content. Lonely Planet guides and glossy brochures aside, it’s always best to hear about all the best restaurants, shopping, clubs, etc. from someone who’s actually been there and doesn’t have an agenda.

Of course, all the shared content in the world could never take the place of the adventure and new friendship that can arise from bellying up to the bar and asking a local.
