MySpace Users Not Sure What to Make of Murdoch

Poor Rupert. He’s barely gotten a chance to settle in and already trouble is brewing at MySpace.

Less than a month after the News Corporation’s acquisition of Intermix, the company that owns MySpace, comes news of a mutiny among the community site’s membership.

This article on Information Week talks to some MySpace members who fear the Fox News acquisition will have an unsavory effect on the site’s culture. Here’s a quote from 26-year-old Nathan Hall of Milwaukee:

“I’m opposed to what Rupert Murdoch has done to the media, and I don’t want him involved in MySpace.”

Fair enough Nathan, though a News Corp. spokeswoman said that the company has “no intention of imposing any sensibilities on MySpace,” and that any anti-Murdoch messages will be left as is.

It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the acquisition will have on the site’s membership. I’m guessing most are too apathetic/uninformed to deliberately jump ship just because of conflict with parent company politics.

Then again, stories like this one, of a PETA campaign against “rabbit torture” at clothier Wet Seal succeeding thanks to the help of MySpace members suggest that there is a significant group of users willing to back up their beliefs with action.

Left-wing, right-wing aside, the biggest influencer on membership will most likely be whether or not News Corporation decides to start charging users for MySpace services. Then it’s every baby rabbit for himself.

Personally, I never understood why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving, but bunnies go unscathed on Easter. Seems like their time has come.
