Six Apart and Kanoodle Launch Contextual Blog Ads

Six Apart, the company behind innovations such as Movable Type and LiveJournal, recently sent an email to its customers announcing the integration of Kanoodle contextual ads into its hosted blogging software product Typepad.
Some highlights from the press release posted yesterday:
“TypePad Pro users can now immediately place Kanoodle’s content-targeted sponsored links on their sites and view a simple earnings report that allows them to monitor their earnings…Money earned by webloggers from Kanoodle’s content-targeted sponsored links in the first 90 days will automatically be applied toward TypePad subscription fees. After 90 days, any extra money will made be available for the weblogger to spend via PayPal or to pay for future subscription fees.”
Some quick thoughts:
- It’s a pretty cool system they’ve got set up. Since it’s a paid service, TypePad users already have accounts into which funds can be deposited without requiring any complicated set-up.
- TypePad will be using eBay for the payments, pretty good news for them in light of all that’s been happening.
- What are Google and Yahoo going to do next? In all likelihood Google will be adding AdSense ads on Blogger but Yahoo’s next move is not as clear. They could very well acquire Six Apart, as many have been predicting.
- Steve Outing says it may be a good way to pay volunteer bloggers, and we agree. It costs little for the organization, though the likelihood of significant income generation is low. Just like real non-profit work. Sigh.
