Google Fast Forwards Video Search Playback

Google will soon be launching an in-browser playback feature, according to this post by journalist John Battelle. This is the next step in a series of events kicked off earlier in the year with the premiere of video search in late January.

No word on the number of videos Google’s amassed since it began taking uploads in April, but those tagged as “free” will be available for real time streaming via the open-source VLC Media Player. John Battelle says he was told by a “good source” that all the content has been “human scanned” for adult content and copyright violations, though it’s likely a few slips are going to get by.

This seems like a good opportunity for a tie-in with Google Wallet and the idea of a lightweight plug-in that plays results right in your browser is pretty exciting. Wonder if this will take a bite out of Microsoft’s piece of the pie, similar to Firefox with IE?

On a side note, the story was leaked to Battelle after a comment on his blog pointed him to a Dutch site containing an accidental post from the official Google Blog commenting on the new features. Gotta love the Internet - not only does it never let you forget your mistakes, it makes sure the rest of the world doesn’t as well.

Another side note, why not look for a video of this tiny mullet-sporting tough guy as your first search? You’ll be glad you did.
