If you’re like us, you stopped watching Jeopardy! right around the time Alex Trebek shaved off his mustache. Things just got…umm, weird.
So if you’re nostalgic for the old Answer-Question format, take heart - we’ve got one for you:
It’s the only search engine to increase it’s user base over the last 60 days, at the expense of its competition.
(cue cheesy theme music)
The question: “What is Google, Alex?”
NetApplications recently released its latest stats for search engine traffic for the month of April.
Google still leads the pack, this time with a 45.85% percent stake in search engine visitor referrals, an increase over the previous months that’s causing investors to take notice. The stock is up from $190 in February to over $226 at the time of this post.
A quick peek at the Big 3 over the last three months:
- February: Google - 43.06%, Yahoo! - 17.02%, MSN - 11.52%
- March: Google - 44.51%, Yahoo! - 16.98%, MSN - 10.86%
- April: Google - 45.85%, Yahoo! - 15.35%, MSN - 10.86%
Some quick thoughts:
AdSense Reigns King: It contributed 4.19% to Google’s dominance in April, up from 3.35% in March. We’re predicting even more oomph from the the addition of banner ads and RSS ads.
With or Without You: Many advertisers frustrated with Google’s customer service, policies, and/or tools simply can’t live without the volume it brings. It’s also why the little engines continue to struggle with their uphill climb.
What Now?: It’s not just search that Google is rocking. As it builds out its offering with free software products that provide real value to users (and real revenue opportunities for advertisers), its grip grows ever tighter on what users do when they first turn on their computer. It’s also why Bill Gates is out for blood.

A fast gain in marketshare for such a competitive space; it’s not as if Yahoo! is sitting still. And especially interesting when you consider there are elements of the Overture interface that are arguably far better than Google’s - per your second bullet.
