First BitTorrent Bust Hits US

Just two days ago we posted our prediction of trouble ahead for BitTorrent.

Now comes word on BoingBoing of the first US BitTorrent bust. In a move smacking of psychological warfare, the home page of Elite Torrents has been colored a bright red (EMERGENCY!) with stern language (BIG FONTS ARE SCARY!) warning users that:

“Individuals involved in the operation and use of the Elite Torrents network are under investigation for criminal copyright infringement.”

Hey nerds, this means YOU!

This morning FBI and US Immigration agents executed 10 search warrants against leading members of the P2P network. According this Department of Justice press release, Elite Torrents’ 133,000 members have downloaded more than 17,800 movie and software titles in the past four months alone, the most famous of which being Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which was available six hours before its theatre debut.

(Side note: I don’t want you to break any laws finding the information, but if anyone knows the name of Obi Wan’s awesome rainbow lizard dragon-type thing in Sith, please let me know. It’s been driving me nuts!)
