BitTorrent Set to Launch Search Servuce

In the online equivalent of affixing a bright red bullseye to one’s chest and holding up a placard that sues “SUE ME”, Bram Cohen of BitTorrent has leaked word that his 5-person firm will soon be releasing a search engine that crawls the Internet for torrent files. Says Cohen in this interview in Slyck:

“It’s like Google for torrents. We’re going to be doing ongoing improvements of its comprehensiveness and relevancy ranking.”

BitTorrent’s Chief Operating Officer, Ashwin Navin, dismisses any talk of a suit, saying that because the results are delivered without any human intervention there’s no violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which would classify such a site as a protected information tool.

Maybe so, but people have sued (and won) for much less. Though we don’t necessarily agree with the MPAA’s take on things, Cohen is certainly not helping his case by giving them even more of a reason to sue.

By now you’ve probably already seen the MPAA press release, where President & CEO Dan Glickman comes off like a totally out-of-touch tool, with statements like:

“… theft dims the magic of the movies for everyone…”

and

“…you can click but you can’t hide.”

Maybe he’s forgotten about another pirating method, that is, the $5 dollar Chinatown DVD. I’ve heard others say they get crappy sound quality once in a blue moon, but it’s never failed for me.

Wait, I mean someone else…I don’t do stuff like that.
