Amazon has cleaned up its act with a redesign that’s winnowed the interface down to just 2 tabs - “[Your Name Here]’s Store” and “See All 31 Product Categories”. You should be seeing it on FireFox and IE, but if you’re not, here’s a screenshot on Flickr.

We like it, and here’s why:
- Amazon’s grown to more categories than could be handled by the old interface. The old tabs were overly broad and made it hard to find certain items - how do you quickly get to cosmetics and perfume? Apparel & accessories wasn’t the most logical labeling.
- Less is more, and the 2 tab design is a step toward making navigation more fast and flexible, without major messing with the branding look & feel.
- The “search” box is bigger and more centrally located. The old one was small and not in keeping with the search box placement of industry competitors such as eBay, Google, and Yahoo!
- Looks like they’re continuing to push the integration of A9 - the search box is now to the right of the search box rather than down below. Wonder if there’s any plans to eventually fully integrate the two and how soon something like this will happen.
For such a large, established site, the navigation on Amazon’s always been a little frustrating. Hopefully this tweak will help change that.
As a side note, I had one of those “You think you know me, Amazon, but you don’t” moments this morning as I was checking out my “My Store” tab. There were a ton of favorite categories and recommendations that had nothing to do with me whatsoever, the result of some book/movie/product research I’ve been doing for a freelance article. Even though it’s just a computer, I somehow feel the need for vindication. Dear Amazon: I do not want a baby any time soon. I am not obsessed with Julia Roberts movies, and I have no need for a $250 dollar bathing suit top.
